Ashkal Alwan announces an open call for applicants currently living in Lebanon to participate in the 2023 edition of the Home Workspace Program (HWP), taking place on site in Beirut from January 16 through July 25, 2023.

Launched in 2011, HWP is an annual arts study program that invites fellows to develop their formal, technical and theoretical skills in a critical setting. It provides enrolled fellows with feedback and resources to support their practice, a monthly stipend, and a shared studio space. Past editions of HWP were open to applicants from all over the world. Due to the exceptional nature of the situation in Lebanon, HWP 2023 will be strictly prioritizing artists and cultural practitioners living and working in the country.

HWP 2023 will consist of seminars, skills-based workshops, and critique sessions led by and in dialogue with artists, scholars, writers, and others to be announced in the coming months. Unlike past editions, the curriculum will not be defined through a set of pre-established themes and inquiries, but structured according to the individual and collective needs of selected fellows and their practices.

Eligibility, conditions, and application:

An admissions committee will select fellows based on the merit of their previous work and future projects. Applications can be submitted until November 21, and selected fellows will be notified by December 15, 2022.

All artists and cultural practitioners currently living in Lebanon are eligible to apply, regardless of age and nationality. Applicants who followed online courses during the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Home Workspace Program are also encouraged to apply. Exceptionally this year, applicants based outside of Lebanon will not be considered, but are welcome to enroll in online seminar offerings.

Applicants should be able to commit to HWP’s full-time schedule. External engagements must be kept at a minimum and should not interfere with each fellow’s commitment to the program.

The program will be carried out primarily in English, with some courses conducted in Arabic.

Up to eight fellows will be selected to take part in HWP 2023; each will receive a monthly stipend and a shared studio space.

To apply: Please submit a one-page CV, portfolio of past works (>10MB) and a letter of motivation (300–500 words) to hwp@ashkalalwan.org. Questions concerning the application process, or the program itself, can be directed to the same email address.
